Welcome to the April edition of Protech IT News. I
hope this tax season is not too overwhelming for all of you.
Apple and Microsoft have made a major announcement. On March 26th, Microsoft announced plans to offer software applications for
the iPhone. This is a big deal! We could soon find Microsoft Office on the iPhone.
In the March 26th
Information Week article “Microsoft
Sees Possibilities for the iPhone”,
Antone Gonsalves states “One element
|
|
of the iPhone upgrade that should prove helpful to
Microsoft is support for the software maker's Exchange e-mail server.
Earlier this year, Apple said it licensed Microsoft's ActiveSync protocol
for connecting the iPhone's e-mail client directly to an Exchange server.
As a result, e-mail, calendaring and contact items can be pushed directly
to the smart phone.”
This will be awesome for the
iPhone users. Today, an iPhone in the synchronized world of Microsoft
Exchange users is very frustrating for both the user and for IT
consultants. It may take a while for all of the bugs to be worked out,
but it will be worth the wait.
This month, I have selected
articles that are related to disaster recovery and protecting your data.
This topic has become more important than ever. Today’s systems are more
complicated and have more data storage requirements than ever. Getting
systems back up and running in a timely fashion has become very
difficult. Cost effective tools are now becoming available.
Thanks,
Marty

Virtualization Overview
by Jane Cage, COO,
HTS
We
live in a world that constantly forces us to “do more with less”.
Employees are expected to be more efficient. Multi-function devices are
becoming the standard on many desktops. We multi-task by answering email,
talking on the phone and reviewing a spreadsheet – all at the same time.
We shouldn’t be surprised then that IT departments are
asking the same of their fileservers. When server utilization gets
measured, we find that many servers have much more capacity than they
actually use for the majority of the time. With so much excess capacity –
why not run more than one server on a single machine? That’s what
virtualization is all about -- one physical machine running more than one
server operating system. Read More

Preserve and
Protect Your Data
Summary
As the amount of data being created continues to increase, and that info
is accessed and shared by more people, SMBs can't afford to ignore the
need for data protection.
Small
and medium businesses are powered by information.
Should your business lose that information or even suffer an interruption
in access, it can have serious consequences. When it comes to protecting
their electronic data, some SMBs feel they are at a disadvantage because
they lack the large budgets and dedicated IT staff that many large
enterprises enjoy. While this may be true, that doesn’t detract from the
fact that SMBs face the same fundamental data protection concerns as
large businesses, as no business is too small to be immune to data loss.
As the amount of data being created continues to increase, and that info
is accessed and shared by more people, you can’t afford to ignore the
need for data protection. Read More

Headers and
Footers Made Simple
It's
easier than ever to customize your Word 2007 documents with unique
headers and footers. You don't need to be a designer — with a few clicks
you can create a designer look while you insert an additional layer of
information in multipage documents. Choose from a gallery of designs, and
change the theme to suit your needs.
These demos show you how
headers and footers can make your work look more professional and help
readers keep their bearings. Remember, people don't necessarily read a
report or paper from page 1 — they skip ahead to the parts that interest
them and even extract and photocopy sections. When you set Word to
automatically add elements like page numbers, section titles, date, and
author name, you ensure that each page bears the essential information
that situates it within the whole of your document. Take the demos for a
spin and take your documents to a whole new
level. See Demo
